Il brano "Down Come The Rain" è stato scritto da Mitch Murray che lo ha inciso con l'etichetta Fontana Records nell'ottobre 1965 con lo pseudonimo di "Mr. Murray".
In Italia è stata ripresa dai Giganti che ne hanno fatto una cover dal titolo "Una Ragazza In Due".

Mitch Murray, il cui vero nome è Lionel Michael Stitcher, nasce il 30 Gennaio 1940 ad Hove, nel Sussex (Inghilterra).
Inizia la carriera come compositore scivendo "How Do You It?" brano prodotto da George Martin per Gerry & The Pacemakers, gruppo alternativo ai Beatles del 1962. Il brano raggiunge immediatamente la prima posizione nelle classifiche di vendita.
Il brano seguente, "I Like It" riceve lo stesso trattamento. Mitch Murray prosegue la sua carriera di songwriter collaborando con artisti quali Freddie & The Dreamers per cui scrive "You Were Made For Me" e "I’m Telling You Now".
Una cosa poco nota è che, per ammissione dello stesso Sting, un suo libro scritto nel 1964 dal titolo "How To Write A Hit Song", incoraggiò uno Sting dodicenne ad iniziare a scrivere canzoni. Infatti Sting Parla di Mitch Murray come del suo mentore.
Altri successi scritti da Murray sono stati "Even The Bad Times Are Good" (The Tremeloes) , "The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde" (Georgie Fame), "Goodbye Sam, Hello Samantha" (Cliff Richard), "Ragamuffin Man" (Manfred Mann), "Hitchin’ a Ride" (Vanity Fare), e "Avenues And Alleyways", "Las Vegas", and "I Did What I Did for Maria" (Tony Christie).
Nel 1974 fonda l'etichetta discografica Bus Stop e lancia Paper Lace con i brani "Billy Don't Be A Hero" e "The Night Chicago Died".
La sua carriera di songwriter prosegue parallelamente a quella di scrittore di commedie e di libri di successo.
Attualmente è impegnato nella scrittura di pieces teatrali.

The Jean Genie - The Story

Composta da David Bowie nel Novembre del 1972 a New York è compresa nell'album "Aladdin Sane" del 1973.

Scritta nel periodo dell'esperienza fatta a New York da Bowie risente molto delle influenze artistiche di personaggi quali Andy Warhol, Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop (a cui si è ispirato nella stesura del brano). E' da notare una certa somiglianza della parte musicale con "I'm a man" di Bob Diddley nella versione degli Yardbyrds.

Il video ufficiale del brano ha la regia di Mick Rock ed è stato girato, guarda caso, al Mars Hotel di San Francisco con la supervisione di Cyrinda Foxe (consulente di immagine di Andy Warhol).

Molto a lungo si è discusso sul fatto che il titolo "The Jean Genie" fosse un riferimento diretto a Jean Genet (noto autore omosessuale dell'epoca) ma David Bowie, maestro dell'ambiguità artistica, non ha mai nè smentito, nè confermato.

Sempre in tema di "copiature d'autore" è da segnalare una vertenza scaturita dal confronto tra "The Jean Genie" e "Blockbuster" degli Sweet (firmata da Mike Chapman & Nicky Chinn) pubblicata appena dopo il brano di Bowie.
